Hello,

One of the great challenges we face in Africa as we start new churches among the poor (35 new churches planted in the last three years in four countries), is selecting leaders to oversee the churches. As we seek to raise up local leaders, these are some of the challenges as face: multiple marriage partners, ancestor worship practices, poverty mentality, abusive relationships, unemployment, lack of work skills, and more... please pray for us and with us to be good examples of servant leadership, would you?

Just as we are challenged, Sally and I and our team feel it is a great privilege to serve the new churches. We get to be mothers and fathers to spiritual sons and daughters!

Here is one way we seek to raise up new leaders - it is called MAWL and it works like this:

M - Model servant leadership as facilitators that gets everyone to be involved in outreach, worship, Bible study, baptism, and praying for each other
A - Assist others to be facilitative leaders as quickly as possible, sometimes within weeks, sometimes months, but never wait years
W - Watch how new leaders do things and coach them behind the scenes
L - Leave or withdraw to the background so the new leaders exercise their gifts and learn by doing. Leaving doesn't mean abandoning the new church.
