How Should We Select Leaders?

As we seek to raise up local leaders, these are some of the challenges as face: multiple marriage partners, ancestor worship practices, poverty mentality, abusive relationships, unemployment, lack of work skills, and more... please pray for us and with us to be good examples of servant leadership, would you? Just as we are challenged, Sally and I and our team feel it is a great privilege to serve the new churches. We get to be mothers and fathers to spiritual sons and daughters! Here is one way we seek to raise up new leaders - it is called MAWL and it works like this: <ul> <li>M - Model servant leadership as facilitators that gets everyone to be involved in outreach, worship, Bible study, baptism, and praying for each other</li> <li>A - Assist others to be facilitative leaders as quickly as possible, sometimes within weeks, sometimes months, but never wait years</li> <li>W - Watch how new leaders do things and coach them behind the scenes</li> <li>L - Leave or withdraw to the background so the new leaders exercise their gifts and learn by doing. The story about Angela has been passed on to us by Mike and Kalyn Arndt. It is such a God story!!! "I wanted to tell you a bit about Numesa. The first time I saw Numesa I cried. The tears kept streaming quietly down as I saw a beautiful woman in her 20's so wracked by illness. She was so tiny because she lost so much weight. Numesa was found by the short term mission teams from Kansas City, Kansas and Norman, Oklahoma this past May. She was VERY ILL. She had a bad case of Tuburculosis. She is also in a wheel chair unable to walk with various other health problems. So the teams began to pray for her healing. She felt something when the team members prayed and she went back to the doctor. He told her, "I don't believe it it but the TB is gone." Numesa's mom said she was getting stronger. She was sitting up more on her own. She began to have hope for her future. She even asked Mike to come and work on a resume so she could get ready to go back to work. Now that is inspiring faith! In her weakess she is already thinking how to work. So Numesa's doctor wanted to test her again this week about the TB. He just could not believe it was gone. SO she again got the news that she is 100 percent healed of TB. She is also doing better on all the other counts of her illness. Numesa wanted to get baptised right away. Today we had a wonderful celebration of Numesa giving her life to Jesus, 15 of us sang and danced and loved being with her. She told us even if it rained hard today and was cold she knew today that she was going to be baptised. What a beautiful, determined woman. She is glowing with an inner strength. She has a darling daughter that is 21 months old named Lilitha. The childs name means delight. And that is what she is. For any skeptics for short term missions.... This is one of the amazing fruit. A short term team found her, we have been following up with her ever since, and now a life is changed forever. Her mother is changed as well. Full of hope and wanting to get together to learn and share about Jesus. These are the days that I count it all worth leaving the dearest to my heart, my precious family and friends. The ones that we get to disciple are like mining for gold." It's true what Mike and Kalyn write: we get to mine for gold! Blessings, Floyd Numesa being baptized in a wet suit - she was too thin to endure the water of a non-heated swimming pool. This month is the month of fasting for Muslims, called Ramadan. Many are seeking answers, like Khalid. He asked people who were well informed about the Qur’an to get more understanding. But as a good Muslim, his heart did not find any rest. One night he had a dream in which he saw the words “I am the God that you are looking for, I am the truth”. The following night he had the same dream. The next day Khalid’s heart was very troubled so he went to see his friend and told him about the dreams. Then his friend explained that it was probably Jesus who had revealed himself to him and he invited him to pray to Jesus to reveal Himself to him. Khalid was then secretly welcomed into an assembly of believers. This is not always the case. New believers from a Muslim background often have difficulties being accepted by local assemblies. Some groups of believers fear that they will suffer persecution if they help a Muslim background believer. We have a team right now exploring possibilities of pioneering new communities of faith in two different Muslim-majority lands. Please pray for Stephen, Trish, Adi and Roanne, would you? For safety, discernment, and faith for the impossible. Other prayer points to assist you as you pray for Muslims and for our team: <ul> <li>Pray for the secret believers who ask for help from local churches and do not find it, that they will continue to hope in Christ.</li> <li>Pray for the leaders of believing communities of Jesus followers in Muslim countries. They are subject to varied and serious pressures.</li> <li>Pray for local assemblies - that they would be willing to take the risk of helping new believers and that their communities could become real sources of refuge for those who are discovering new life in Christ.</li> <li>Pray for All Nations, our network of teams and ministries and local communities of believers to have a release of finances to train more workers for Muslim lands, for the trade school we are starting to train church planters to be self-supporting.</li> </ul> Thank you! We are starting a trade school! What does that have to do with missions? One of the challenges of sending African missionaries as church planters is support. We believe we should train African church planters to be self supporting by teaching them a trade. This month we launch a trade school to help meet that need. We trust it will have a huge impact. We will train in computer skills ( to start internet cafes), hospitality (to start back packers lodges), farming (to be able to grow and raise food to sell), and pre-school education (to start and coach pre-primary schools). We are trusting God for $50,000 dollars (about R380,000) to launch the trade school. Please pray with us, will you? To give you an idea of what we do... We spend time with the poor and unchurched, including Muslims and others who are totally unreached with the gospel, helping them practically, sharing Jesus, and starting new communities of Jesus followers, what we call simple churches. We gather all the churches for a celebration every few weeks to do baptisms, and to give the new believers a sense of being part of something bigger than their small home church. In the last two years our team has helped start about 40 simple churches. One of the things God has called me,Floyd, to do is mobilize more workers for the harvest. We are hoping in our life time to see workers go into every country in Africa, especially the Muslim areas of North Africa. There are over 350 million people in Africa who have never heard the Gospel one time! I, Floyd, just spoke at one of the universities here in South Africa for their “missions week.” There were hundreds of students that were volunteering to go to the nations. There was also lots of interest in the All Nations ministry here and in CPx. We’re hoping we’ll get more helpers! Everywhere we look there are needs, people to help, and ministry to be done. Six month CPx (Church Planting Experience), our leadership and training program just finished. Of the 40 students that completed the CPx program, 34 will be working full or part-time as missionaries. 29 of those will be working with All Nations, and 22 of those will be joining us here in Cape Town. God has opened a door for them to work with a Bedouin tribe. The sheik (chief) is the grandson of a man who received a dream from the Lord many years ago and as a result was given a Bible and then came to faith in Jesus. There are about 200 believers meeting in 18 house churches in the tribe of Muslim people. We will serve their practical needs (work in the school for K-10 grade), and coach and mentor believers to spread the good news of Jesus. One of our leaders just returned from the Transkei region of South Africa. If you have the time, you will be greatly encouraged by the story he tells... Feet Not Tires! Tandaza caught my eye and smiled. It was one of those moments that when you look back you just see the hand of God all over it. Lukas and I were then invited into his home and met Tandaza's mother. As we sat and listened to Tandaza and his mother's story we were absolutely spellbound. The team was working in the city of Mthata (Umtata). After our Combi van was stolen we had to remind ourselves that the Word of God says "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news" not "How beautiful on the mountains are the tires of those who bring good news"! So started our outreach with a commitment to walk where we needed to be. We found a poor community that was walking distance from where we stayed and started visiting families within the community. Tandaza's little sister was brutally raped and murdered a few years ago. His father sat in court and testified against the men who did it and was then threatened by them. He developed heart problems over a period of time, according to the family because of the stress caused by these threats. He died last year. That leaves Tandaza, a young man in his early twenties, his mother and his brother who is a drug addict and living away from the family. Thandaza, so concerned for his mother, left his job in Cape Town to be with her. When we asked what we can pray for he asked for a job in Mthata so he can remain close to his mother and take care of her. Lukas and I prayed. We prayed gently but firmly believing that God could do something and touch a family who have suffered so much. We could sense the presence of Jesus there as we prayed. We could sense a change come over them as if some faint glimmer of hope started rising in their hearts again. There were smiles through the sadness when we left the house. It was only after I came back to Cape Town that Lukas phoned me with the news. That very same day a man offered Thandaza a job and the next day he started working. God cares about the poor and the injustices of our world. I just know that his heart breaks for this family. Will you please pray with me for Thandaza and his mother? Will you consider that God might have a Thandaza in your life for you to reach out to with the love of Christ? "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" Psalm 34:18 "A Father to the fatherless, a defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling." North Africa. Iran. India. China. Africa. Millions of new believers are coming to Jesus. Five million among the Bojpuri in India is just one example. Believers are suffering for their faith and the church is being born in unimaginable sacrifice. Why are we seeing the same results in the Christianized West? Three reasons: <ol> <li>Lack of obedience to the word: One example: followers of Jesus don't pursue finding the person of peace, finding one who's oikos is open, then making disciples among them, as Jesus instructed in Luke 10</li> <li>Traditional ways of doing church encourage a "watch the main man on sunday" mentality instead of every believer getting out and making disciples through a lifestyle of obedience.</li> <li>A lack of willingness to suffer and sacrifice. It takes sacrifice to plant churches and Western believers don't believe in sacrifice.</li> </ol> Recently, I wrote to a young church planter in the making in the Unite States. He was worried about finding a church or a team to work with. Here is the advise I gave him: "i would love to stay connected to you guys. it is going to take some pioneering and persevering for you to start simple churches with others there where you are. best bet is go door to door in a poor neighborhood until you find a person of peace and then if their family or network is open, start a jesus bible study with them. don't call it church, just study the world. two qualifications: the person of peace has to be open and their network (oikos) has to be open to doing regualr bibles studies. get them to the word, teach them simple bible study and watch god speak to them!!! We have been learning how to do that with "discovery" bible study approach in cape town... very simple. based on belief that god is drawing people to jesus by the spirit, that he will teach people through the word if they study it together, and group discovery is much more powerful than individual study because you are imparting the DNA of a future simple church while it is still a study. for example, everyone participates. the bible is the focus. there is accountability to what each other to obey what they are reading. it is focused on non-believers studying the word together. There are three steps to doing the discovery bible study method: <ol> <li>choose a passage that is short about obedience, hearing holy spirit, jesus, etc. ask people to write it down from their translation.</li> <li>ask them to write it down in their own words</li> <li>ask them to read it and write down things they hear god saying to them that apply to their lives that they should do in the next week</li> </ol> Lead the bible study 2 times. then turn it over to someone in the group to lead. You model it first two times, then in the following bibles studies you sit on the outside of the bible study circle and watch as new leader leads the same process of discovery. doesn't have to be a christian to lead it, preferably not in fact. This is the MAWL method of caoching: model, assist, watch, leave You are a commando bro. you are an army guy. you can do this! it is will take pioneering leg work, sweat, tears, loneliness and lots and lots of prayer, then more prayer, but practice luke 10. go to the poor and the loverlooked and you will find them!! look for the person of peace, the person is open and has a network of friends he or she can gather. About wanting a team to work with you: don't look for them among the sheep but among the wolves (luke 10:3). this is why jesus said to his disciples to pray for laborers from the harvest. he didn't want the new believers to be tainted by religious people. find your team amongst the unsaved. maybe go door to door and say you want to start a bible study for people who are not church attenders but who want to look at jesus again. shake the dust off your feet from those who are not HUNGRY! do bible study in their home, with non-believers. it must be open seekers, not cynical or highly christianized (they have too many non-biblical preconceptions)." I am passionate about seeing disciples made who gather and reproduce themselves in others. May God empower us to see massive numbers of new believers, but much more important, to see transformed individuals, families and communities. May God empower believers in Christianized lands to find new wineskins to hold the wine of millions of new believers.
